Macro mode that enables youto bring the lens as close as1cm / 0.4 inches to the subject

Macro mode is most convenient when you are taking an enlarged picture of a small object. It allows you to place your lens very close to the subject, as close as 1cm / 0.4inches (on the wide-angle setting). Use the super-macro features of the camera to get near small creatures and other objects to obtain optimum images and enjoyment from the beautiful and enchanting underwater environment.

The working distance when taking photos in the macro-mode is from 1cm / 0.4inches to ∞ with the wide-angle setting and from 4cm / 1.6inches to ∞ with the telephoto setting. The macro mode allows minute details of small objects to be captured that ordinarily would not be captured and to be represented vividly. The camera is equipped with a full array of functions for close-up photography, such as Zoom Macro mode (minimum shooting distance: approx. 1cm / 0.4inch) that makes the object appear larger than in the ordinary macro mode and the ability to shift the target of auto-focusing without changing the picture composition.

The camera is equipped with a 1/1.75 charge coupled device (CCD) image sensor having 10.01 million effective pixels, which offers superior resolution and the ability to vividly record every detail of your precious moments. (The maximum recordable number of pixels is 3648x2736) The Smooth Imaging Engine II faithfully reproduces every detail of the picture, and outputs high-quality, low-noise images. In this way, detailed and realistic images are created that are suitable for enlargement.

The focal length of the 3x optical zoom lens is 5.1 to 15.3mm, or 24 to 72mm on a conventional 35-mm film camera. The lens has a maximum aperture (f-stop value) from f2.5 to f4.4. The perspective can be adjusted precisely according to your style with the wide-angle setting to capture the dynamic environment. In addition, unique visual effects can be used to enhance your pictures. The step zoom function enables the zoom focal length to be fixed in five increments, at 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 72mm, equivalent to a conventional film camera. The lens construction consists of 11 elements in seven groups, utilizing aspherical and special low-dispersion glass lenses with high refractive index.

The three picture quality modes are Fine (F), Normal (N) and RAW. The RAW mode (DNG format file) allows the images to be processed on personal computers and high quality images to be recorded. A JPEG file (in the picture quality: Fine (F), Normal (N) or N640) associated with the RAW format file can also be recorded at the same time.

The camera is equipped with a CCD shift-method vibration correction function, which is exceptionally effective in stabilizing images when the shutter is pressed. The function prevents images from being blurred by hand motion. The function is also effective when you want to take a picture without using a strobe thereby capturing the ambience of the scene.

Poor: The picture was taken in the normal mode. The images tend to be blurry when a flash is not used in a dark place.

Good: The image is stabilized and appears beautiful when taken with the vibration correction function.

The camera is equipped with a 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD monitor. The monitor can be clearly viewed horizontally or vertically from a 170 degrees angle, which enables you to enjoy photographing even underwater where the light can be reflected diffusely while viewing a clear image and shooting mode on the screen. The picture image and data can be easily confirmed by using the histogram display, which allows you to control the exposure more precisely while taking test photographs on the monitor using the different luminance distribution of the picture image. The monitor also features grid guide display (when in the shooting mode) and white saturation highlights display (when in the playback mode).
